Winter Weather Awareness Day Encourages Nebraskans to Plan Ahead and Stay Safe
RELEASE DATE: Nov 05, 2026
November 5, 2026 (LINCOLN, NEB.) — As winter approaches, Nebraska officials are encouraging residents to prepare for snowstorms, extreme cold and hazardous road conditions. Taking steps now can help protect individuals, families and communities throughout the winter season.
Governor Jim Pillen has declared Thursday, November 5, 2026, as Winter Weather Awareness Day, encouraging Nebraskans to review emergency plans and prepare for potential winter weather hazards.
“Being prepared is part of living in our state, and I encourage every Nebraskan to take Winter Weather Awareness Day as an opportunity to think ahead and make sure their household is ready for the season,” said Governor Pillen. “A little preparation can go a long way toward helping us face whatever winter brings.”
The Nebraska Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) urges residents to update emergency kits, monitor weather forecasts and check road conditions before traveling.
“Preparing ahead of a winter storm can help prevent emergencies and keep families safe,” said NEMA Assistant Director Erv Portis. “Keep essential supplies in your vehicle, stay informed about changing conditions and postpone travel when roads become dangerous.”
Every vehicle should have a winter emergency kit containing:
• Warm blankets and extra clothing
• An ice scraper and snow shovel
• Jumper cables and a first aid kit
• A flashlight with extra batteries
• A cell phone charger or power bank
Residents should customize kits to meet their household’s needs, including medications, food and water. Before traveling, check the Nebraska Department of Transportation’s Nebraska 511 map for real-time traffic cameras, road conditions and snowplow tracking.
