Fires Start in 6 Counties
RELEASE DATE: Apr 11, 2023
Wildfires in at least six counties were reported Tuesday afternoon because of dry and windy conditions across Nebraska. Fire departments in Cherry, Garfield, Jefferson, Lincoln, Rock, and Wheeler counties responded to wildfires. Kilgore residents in Cherry County evacuated as a precaution, but that evacuation has been lifted. The Lincoln County fire is in mop-up stages.
Local officials in Cherry and Garfield counties have declared emergencies and requested state assistance in the form of aerial application of retardant and water. Gov. Jim Pillen has authorized state assistance for Cherry and Garfield counties. Local applicators were also contacted to drop water on the fires.
Critical fire weather conditions will continue Wednesday. Low humidity and gusty winds will continue tomorrow. Fires that develop will spread rapidly and be difficult to control. Outdoor burning is not recommended.
Always follow the instructions from local fire departments and maintain a heightened awareness of anything that can generate a spark or flame. Be prepared to act if a wildland fire develops in your area.
