Crews are scaling back operations on the Carter Canyon Fire as aerial observations show containment to be at 85 percent, with the fire’s footprint remaining at 15,630 acres.

Crews are continuing to monitor shifting winds and fluid weather conditions as they work to contain the Carter Canyon Fire’s perimeter and patrol the interior for hot spots.
As of 5:00 pm MDT, the fire is estimated to be at 15,630 acres, with 50 percent containment.

A large wildfire south of Gering has destroyed three homes and damaged several others as it continues to spread through the dry vegetation in Nebraska’s Wildcat Hills. As of this afternoon, aerial surveillance showed the Carter Canyon Fire to be at 15,591 acres, an increase from 13,051 acres yesterday due to significant wind-driven runs. The fire remains at 30 percent contained, not because of lost containment line, but increases in acreage.
