Hazardous Materials Technician (80 hrs)
· This course is based on NFPA 472, 2013 edition, Responders to Hazardous Materials/Weapons of Mass Destruction Incidents. This course will use a foundation of basic chemistry which will enable the first responder with the knowledge to respond to a release of an unknown solid/liquid/or gas with the purpose of controlling and stopping the release. The function of the responder at the technician level is to operate in an “offensive” manner which means to plug, patch, or stop the release of hazardous substances at the source. Through the use of practical exercises and teamwork responders will gain the necessary knowledge to demonstrate competency in implementing the emergency response plan; determine and classify a product and be able to verify known and unknown materials using field survey instruments and equipment; function within an assigned role in the incident command system; understand hazard and risk assessment techniques; perform advanced control, containment, and/or confinement operations, implement decontamination procedures; understand termination procedures and understand basic chemical and toxicological terminology and behavior.
· Requirements for Certification: Candidates shall be at least 18 years of age. Complete a practical skills examination (PSE) with a "Passing" score. Complete an 100-question written examination with a passing score of 70% or higher
· No Lodging or Meals are provided during this course.
· Student must attend all classes to receive the state certificate.
